Xbootmgr WAS working couple months ago, no "optimizers" and other stuff was used.

Maybe i can try something else?

The xperf logs generated on Windows 8.1 x64 could not be displayed correctly by xperf on Windows 7 x64

I created a xperf log on Windows 8.1 x64. I can view it without any problems on Windows 8.1 x64. But when I open it wiht xperf on Windows 7 x64, the lift time of all processes is permanent, which means there is no processes start/stop during the log collection. It is wrong. My co-worker also met this problem on his machine. I am using xperf (WPA) version 6.3.9600.16384, which was installed a couple of weeks ago. It should be a pretty new version. Does anyone know how to solve the problem?

By the way, I can't attach the xperf log here because there is some sensitive information. Sorry about that.

Thanks,

URGENT: how do I get to know PID from perfmon.exe for ".NET CLR xxxxx" instances

$

Hi,

Since my application has number of processes running with same name, (for an example: <myproduct.exe, PID=1>, <myproduct.exe, PID=2>, <myproduct.exe, PID=3> etc..) but I’m interested in just one among them (for me only option left is to choose the one using PID).

I’ve already tried with registry settings as recommended by: http://blogs.technet.com/b/askperf/archive/2010/03/30/perfmon-identifying-processes-by-pid-instead-of-instance.aspx

It works for only if we select counter type as "Process".

But it does not work for “.NET CLR Memory” counters which I’m really interested in.

Urgent*** Please help/suggest me, if there is way to know PID for “.NET CLR counter types.

This could a very common requirement that would really be useful to anybody, I'm wondering how such a basic information is missing from the tool by default.

Eventvwr logs over 6200 errors and warnings

My setup:
Dell i7 with 8G of memory.
Windows 7 sp1 Prof
SQLServer 2008 with BIDS2008
Oracle11gR2  with SQLPLus and SQLdeveloper
Java 7 Update 40 Std Edition
McAffee
Malwarebytes

eventvwr shows over 6,200 errors and warnings.
Errors include kernel-event tracing, MCUpdate, PrintService, DHCP client, DistributedCOM, SQLISService100, MSSQLServer... and many more

But the laptop boots up and run all the installed software without complaining...

QUESTION 1: How to I clear the events in eventvwr and start over so I can monitor the errors as they occur?

QUESTION 2: On startup, McAffee asks me whether I want to allow modification to the disk, this usually occurs after some apps downloaded updates e.g. Windows updates, Adobe updates etc...

I paid over $200 for some company to clean that up, now it's back again :(

"Can't load counters" in Perfmon when adding counters with lodctr

$

Hey,

I'm working with C/C++ in windows 7 64 bit and was trying to add my own performance counter using the version 2.0 counter framework (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa965334(v=VS.85).aspx). Whatever i did, in perfmon (when trying to add my counter) my counter set was always shown with it's GUID and not the given name in the manifest file.  Also, when selecting my counterset it always showed "Can't load counters".  I searched for a day on this and already had a feeling that it was some kind of problem with admin rights.  It seems that running lodctr with a user that has administrator rights is not enough, although lodctr returns a successful completion of the addition of the counter set.  When adding my user to the "Performance Monitor Users" and "Performance Log Users" group, my counter set was finally shown correctly in perfmon.

I hope this info will help others because this isn't mentioned in the counter documentation (or not very visible).

Is it possible to capture TRIM commands in an Xperf trace? And if so, what provider do I need to use?

The performance of my laptop isn't at it's best. I ran a scan to see if there were any errors. It stated that start up was slow, and it is. I was asked what programs I "did not" want to run at start up. I have no idea what needs to run at start up and am afraid I am going to stop a program that needs to be running. Can someone please inform me of what needs to be running?

The Net framework Cleanup tool, as a last resort to reset Windows Update for searching updates failure

$

Windows Update has stopped searching for updates, for Windows 7 Professional x64bit OS hard drive, laptop PC.

I've tried (Windows Update Troubleshooter) & (System Update Readiness Tool), without success to restart searching

for (Windows Updates-online). I've got Net framework Cleanup tool experience before this happened with (searching updates),

but recently I've installed (12) successful updates with  NET frameworks included. This time the stopping of search for updates,

came "after" I used the (Windows Update Diagnostic Tool) to fix downloading & install updates.

Should I go back to using the (Net Framework Cleanup Tool) as a last resort?

Firewall needed?

Not sure which forum to put this in....

If we had a point to point dedicated fiber connection from Office A to Office B and office A has the ISP while office B does not.....so Office B goes over the PtoP connection to Office A to go online....does both offices need a firewall?  Or just Office A?

Thanks,

Measure performance of windows 8 machines using windows Performance Toolkit (WPR tool)

$

I want to create performance baseline for windows 8 machines(like time to winlogon, time to desktop and total boot time etc.). For this I used windows performance toolkit - WPR tool to record or log performance data(using boot scenario) into log file(.etl). I opened generated ETL file using WPA(windows performance analyzer), in processes section, always I am able to see winlogon.exe and explorer.exe  time more than 2 minutes on different machines. when I did it for windows XP(using xperf) machine winlogon.exe always showing as less than 30  seconds.

Can you please let me know, how I can get correct data for following tasks using WPR tool:

1) Time to Winlogon(winlogon.exe)

2) Time to Desktop(explorer.exe )

3) Total Boot time

4) Time to Outlook Start

5) Time to Full Outlook Load

WPA IO stack analysis

REG ADD "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" -v DisablePagingExecutive -d 0x1 -t REG_DWORD -f

xperf -on PROC_THREAD+LOADER+CSWITCH+FILENAME+FILE_IO+FILE_IO_INIT+DRIVERS+FLT_IO_INIT+FLT_IO+FLT_FASTIO+FLT_IO_FAILURE -f kernel.etl -stackwalk CSwitch+DiskReadInit+DiskWriteInit+DiskFlushInit+FileCreate+FileCleanup+FileClose+FileRead+FileWrite+MiniFilterPreOpInit+MiniFilterPostOpInit -BufferSize 1024 -MaxBuffers 1024 -MaxFile 1024 -FileMode Circular

I'm trying to get a stack walk of an application that is experiencing very slow IO to a StorNext mounted SAN. The SAN is mounted via the StorNext client. We are not certain where the latency is occurring. Therefore I have decided to use Windows Performance Analyzer to try and track down the issue. Above are the settings we are using.

In the File IO Duration by process, thread and etc… All the stacks show n/a. However for the MiniFilter graph I get all the stacks. Unfortunately it does not seems that the StorNext mounted volume is using a MiniFilter, as there are no threads listed that relate to the write operation to the SAN.

How can I get the stack for FILE_IO? Also if anyone is familiar with the StorNext client and how it implements its' driver that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advanced

Windows Server 2012 R2 performance enhancement

$

HI All,

Does any have any list of new enhancement in windows performance/architecture for server 2012/R2.

We are facing a situation that many application owner are looking for upgrading from server 2003. Often we are asked questions like should we go for server 2012 R2 or 2008 R2. We need to give them solid justification why choosing server 2012 will be much more effective than server 2008. All are application server which are mostly .net4/Java/other third party application.

It would be good if any one can help me on this.

Thanks and Regards
