Slow PC w/ Win8 Pro

I just got a new computer to spec with Win8 Pro.  It's on an old XP network that the company doesn't want to upgrade right now, but accessing anything on the network (especially email and drawings takes forever. Why?? Excerpts from Microsoft forums below

==============================================================================

Original Title:

Windows 8

Since windows 8 no longer reads .eml email I've had to install Outlook 2010. I am on a XP network and get mail through the server. Outlook takes five minutes just to get to the server and then another few minutes per email to open. WHY!!!!!!!!!!!  I have the same problem trying to get to and open drawings on our server.

I had an older machine that could not work with the bigger 3D files we started working with. I opted for a new machine with window 8 because I thought that it was better  especially with more ram.  I wish I had my old machine back.

Is there a way to get everything on my machine working or am I screwed??????

==============================================================================

Since it's the network operations (like opening files from your server or Outlook email), it sounds like the network is your problem.  XP is 13 years old, sounds like that server is due for an update itself.  It's bottle-necking everything.

But also, many problems in Windows 8.0 (which is already 3 years old itself) and were fixed in the 8.1 update. I notice selected that you haven't got the update yet.  Please open the Windows Store app on your tablet and touch the "Get Windows 8.1 now" button that you see to get the update.

And finally, you might want to take a quick look at :

==============================================================================

Thank you for your reply. I realize that the XP server is old and should be retired but like so many other companies it's hard for them to justify the time and expense to change.

Having said that what I don't understand is that there are 150+ computers here, all of them running Windows previous to Vista. When they access the server it acts like the files are on the hard drive. What I mean is you can access the daily email directory and it opens almost immediately (1-2 sec.). When you select and open an email it's the same thing.  But on my new Win 8 Pro machine I click on the daily email Icon and wait 15-40 sec. to load. (I've timed it), then you click on the folder for today you can wait as long as three minutes to load the emails depending on how many are there.

Because Win 8 deleted anything to read .eml files I had to get Outlook 2010. Now to open an email I have to click on the email which now loads Outlook, (sometimes 5 minutes) before the email opens. Don't even try to open a second email with Outlook open, it WILL lockup. SO you close Outlook and go to the second email. Just today it took me from 8:10am to 10:05am to open and read 11 emails, no response to any just open and read.

This is supposed to be the latest and greatest (LOL) from Microsoft. There must be a way for this NEW machine to act like the old outdated computers and just open an email.

By the way, I turned off search indexing and looked at the startup programs that load. All of them were for Microsoft to run. This computer has no games, bell are whistles. I've loaded the 2D and 3D software that I use for design and nothing else. (EXCEPT Outlook 2010 now). There was absolutely no difference in the performance and the CPU barely registers any use except when I have the 3D software crunching a large project.

com server / client CoCreateInstanceEx failure

I'm studying windows debugging and as reference I have purchase Advanced Windows Debugging by Mario Hewardt and Daniel Pravat.

Recently I have been stuck on the chapter dealing with inter-process communication.

Basically there is a com server and a com client. When executing the client I get a CoCreateInstanceEx failure.

How can I determine why this is failing?

Below is a small extract from a procmon capture.  Do you think this is the cause?

PerfView : Does source code lookup always shows time-based-indicators and not size-based?

$

Hi,

    I've two questions on "source code look-up feature" - this is one of the highlighting features from PerfView (thank you for that).

1) I've created ETL aiming only at managed memory pressure analysis (that is by deselecting all other options except => ".NET", "GC Only", ".NET SampAlloc")

      >> Now if I go to source code look-up from "GC Heap Alloc Stacks" it navigates to the code and shows an indicator (for example "105.7K|") does this mean => CPU time spent here -or- Total memory consumed from here?

2) Currently "source code look-up feature" works only for .etl file and not for .gcDump, is there a way to make it working for .gcDump also with properly configured symbol paths? (I mean without creating .etl files).

      [this would really help me avoiding time & space for ETL in cases where I'm interested only in "gcDump"].

SR INF File

After doing a system recovery, I no longer have the file SR INF (System Restore). For some reason it was deleted from the system 32 folder. I could not find the topic for my question listed.

Sorry my fault. I did mean  %windir%\INF, and it was not listed

WPR Additional Profiles

Beginners question, but what do the addition profiles provide in WPR?

I have done a capture with just the First Level Triage selected and then did the same capture with First Level triage and CPU usage. When I look at the traces in WPA, I can't see any extra graphs or information.

Presumably, the second trace is capturing more detailed information about the CPU, but how do I see this?

Thanks

MSE runs continuously, uses 50 to 60% of my CPU and forces my hard drives to run at a high speed. I have scanned all discs and set the CPU limit at 10%.  How can I get my computer back with out uninstalling MSE?

Cannot extend C: Drive

I know there are a lot of questions similar, but what I think the problem is the space to the right isn't "unallocated" it's "free" space. However, I can't get this to change to unallocated. The option to delete partition on the free space is grayed out, the extend option on C: drive is grayed out. The only option on the free space is to make a new volume.

XBOX 360 Screen Flicker

I have a 6-year old Xbox 360 and so far, there has been no problems apart from very recently, it red-ringed due to hardware error, but I have my compter plugged into anacer monitor and my Xbox is connected to it via HDMI. Whenever I try to swap from my computer to my Xbox, it doesn't pick it up, however when my computer is not plugged into the monitor, it shows the Xbox screen for about a second and goes to black, it does it over and over again. I unplug the HDMI and plug it back in again and it is fine. However I need to unplug it from the monitor, I can't just reset the Xbox, I wish I could just turn it on again and switch screens like it used to. Any help will be amazing. This is a big issue for me as there is about a million wires behind my monitor.

Viewing EventSource events using WPA

$
0
0
Hi All,

I've been having some difficulties getting the events from .NET 4.5 EventSource based providers to show up properly in WPA. PerfView can show them fine, but it lacks the awesome grouping/filtering power of WPA.

I've been collecting using the most recent versions of PerfView and WPT that I can find:

PerfView Version 1.7.0.0 / BuildDate: Thu 10/30/2014 6:41:18.79
Microsoft Windows Performance Analyzer Version 6.3.9600.16384 (winblue_rtm.130821-1623) © 2013

Collection options were initially: no-merging, everything unticked and *MinProvider in the Additional Providers field and then: Kernel Base, .NET, Cpu Samples and Merge.

The program I am using to define MinProvider and generate my test events is as follows:
using System.Diagnostics.Tracing;
namespace MinProvider
{
    [EventSource(Name = "MinProvider")]
    public class MinProvider : EventSource
    {
        public static MinProvider Log = new MinProvider();

        public class Tasks
        {
            public const EventTask TestTask = (EventTask) 1;
        }

        [Event(1, Message = "A test task")]
        public void TestTask(int someNumber, string someString)
        {
            WriteEvent(1, someNumber, someString);
        }
    }

    class Program
    {
        static void Main()
        {
            MinProvider.Log.TestTask(42, "something or other");
        }
    }
}

When opening the resultant .etl files in PerfView, all expected events show up fine with the passed parameters etc. Opening in WPA however just yields two undecoded events for the "{d4104bf2-6935-5a60-e4dd-cfd75107b200}" provider (which I've confirmed is the Guid-hash corresponding to *MinProvider). One of the events has Id 65,534 (which from PerfView I know contains the embedded manifest information), the other has Id 1 and corresponds to my TestTask event.

I've also tried manually extracting the provider's XML manifest from the event stream, by selecting Dump Event in PerfView on the MinProvider/ManifestData event then converting the hex payload to a string, putting it into a MinProvider.man file and running"wevtutil im MinProvider.man". This then results in a
       d4104bf2-6935-5a60-e4dd-cfd75107b200                              : MinProvider
line appearing in the output of "xperf -providers", however WPA still refuses to decode it (I've tried a reboot after the manifest registration as well). Surely after manifest registration it should just be interpreted like any other Crimson provider?

Additionally, I've attempted to capture the trace information using both WPR with a custom profile and with "xperf -start MinSession -on d4104bf2-6935-5a60-e4dd-cfd75107b200". In each case, PerfView was perfectly happy to decode the events, yet WPA wouldn't touch them.

Are there any further steps I can take to troubleshoot this, or is there some obvious step/setting I'm missing?

From what I can tell from blogs.msdn.com/b/vancem/archive/2013/08/10/wpr-wpa-support-for-viewing-system-diagnostics-tracing-eventsource.aspx, things should just work with the versions I have installed. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

EAP service causes slow shutdown

$

Hi
I've got a problem with my desktop PC Win7 pro. serv. pack 1.
All of the sudden I have a very slow shutdown (2-3 min) - for no apparent reason.
I've pinned the problem down to the service EAP (extensible authentication protocol) when this service is stopped Win7 shuts down normally (5 sec).
But I need EAP for internet - currently EAP is set to manual...
Clear pagefile at shutdown is disabled and waittokill is set to the min. value of 2000
Any suggestions?
I've got a etl shutdown trace file for Win performance analyzer, can anybody help me interpret it?

By the way I've got all of my drivers updated..!

GPUView crashes with DXLogger on

$

Hello,

I've been using GPUView for quite a while on my desktop PC with everything working great. Now I moved to using it on a server machine. I manage to create the etl file, but when I try to view the file, GPUView crashes (it doesn't matter on which computer I view the file, only where I create it). I changed the parameters in the log.cmd script to see what's causing the problem, and narrowed it down to the DXLogger: any etl created with DXLogger crashes GPUView, while any etl created without DXLogger is fine. I can use GPUView without the DXLogger but I really need the GPU performance data as well.

Both computers have the same OS (vista x64) and same GPU (nvidia QuadroFX3800). The server is a Supermicro machine with a Nehalem CPU.

Any help will be appreciated.

Shai.

Advice for helping my computer to run smoothly

Here's my dilemma.  I have Avast as my security for viruses but only the version I don't have to pay for.  Also, I have this Malwarebytes on my computer but I don't know if I should go ahead and use it to clean out the bad malware or not with this.

I want to keep my system running smoothly before all this garbage starts piling up on it and I have to pay out more money again.  I would really appreciate a good answer from a knowledgeable tech guy as nobody tells me how to avoid this issue.  Thank you.  Corkylynn
